We Americans tend to break out in hives when told we cannot do whatever we want. From tender ages we are spoon-fed the phrase “you can do anything you set your mind to,” and then in social studies class they teach us that anyone can become president.
Since my sons and my nephew have reached the early years of reading and writing, I have noticed the very American “rules are made to be broken” spirit in them. Many homework sessions involve my nagging voice explaining that writing has rules called grammar that we need to learn and follow, lest we sound like total buffoons.
I often wonder if their contrarian spirit is a function of childhood or a function of our “you can’t tell me what to do” attitude. After all, I cannot imagine that the very custodians of the English language across the pond, with their highly ritualized tea time, tolerate stubborn opposition to capitals, plurals and punctuation.
