Did you finish your 2011 to-do list of tasks around the garden and the house? It's OK if you didn't; the new year gives us a fresh chance to finally get things done.
And we've got some inspiration for you. Area gardeners and homeowners shared some of their 2011 accomplishments. The results of their projects big and small are enough to get us motivated for the year ahead.
Sacramento radio host and lifetime master gardener "Farmer Fred" Hoffman let technology solve a common problem. He set up a private blog page so he and his wife, Jeanne, can have instant access to favorite recipes that use their bountiful backyard harvest.
"Typical scenario: I'm at the supermarket and the light bulb goes off in my head 'I want chili!' But what else goes into our recipe besides homegrown tomatoes, peppers, onions and garlic?" Hoffman explained. "No more guessing. Just whip out the smartphone and go to our recipe blog.
"We use a column on the right-hand side of the blog to list the individual ingredients of all the recipes as a cross reference," he added. "For example, if I'm at the store and I remember we have a ton of figs that we better use quickly, I can click on the word 'figs' and get all the recipes that include figs."
